Some of his quotes:

"If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you're a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind."

"I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center."

Arizona Superior Court Judge Killed

Last night at approx. 8:30 p.m., Dept of Public Safety Officers arrived at the scene of a 2 vehicle fatal collision which occurred on SR 79 near mile post 121, which is approx. 12 miles south of Florence, AZ.

Through the course of the investigation, officers learned 2 vehicles were involved in the collision, a grey 1999 Land Rover which was pulling a boat & a Red 2005 Harley Davison Motor Cycle.

The Land Rover was being driven by 26 year old James Mathewson from Tucson & the Harley Davison was being driven by 50 year old John Gaylord from Chandler. Mathewson was traveling southbound on SR 79 & for an unknown reason, moved right off the roadway, over corrected, moved back left & his boat crossed into the northbound lanes & struck John Gaylord. Gaylord died at the scene, there were no other injuries.

The collision required DPS officers to close SR 79 in both directions for approx. 7 hours. Mathewson’s possible use of alcohol may have been a contributing factor & DPS is still investigating this incident.

John Gaylord has been a Superior Court Judge since 2000, he was most recently assigned to the Juvenile Court Division in the South East Regional Court Facility.

DPS Director Roger Vanderpool said, “We lost a friend & a true defender of America last night, from his days serving our Country as a United States Marine to serving on the bench, he will be missed”.

Presiding Superior Court Judge, Barbara Rodriguez Mundell said, “The tragic death of John Gaylord is a tremendous loss for his beloved family, the court, the legal community, as well as the children & families he served over the past 3 years, while on the Juvenile Court bench. There are countless troubled juveniles whose lives were redirected & rehabilitated by John’s strength, compassion & dedication”.

The World Games 2010 Foundation, Inc. (Foundation), the organization responsible for planning and conducting the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, announced the resignation of its board chairman, Jim Host. Ms. Tandy Patrick has been named the interim chair.

“The possibility of not serving through the full Games preparation period has always been my intention,” stated Jim Host, who has served as chairman of the board since its inception in December, 2005. “I retired several years ago to spend more time with my wife & family, but deferred my retirement to get the 2010 Games off to the best possible start. I think we have accomplished that.”

“It has always been my intent to serve the Foundation until a qualified CEO was both selected & comfortably on board,” Host continued. “It is clear to me that Jack Kelly was the right choice & he has clearly established himself quickly in that role already developing his own network of relationships at a high level.”

“It has been a personal & professional pleasure to work with Jim on planning for the 2010 Games,” said Kelly. “His experience, advice & counsel have been invaluable to me personally & we are fortunate that he was here to get this thing off the ground. I look forward to utilizing Jim on an ongoing basis as we head toward the event.”

“The Commonwealth is indebted to Jim Host for all he has done for Kentucky,” stated Gov. Ernie Fletcher. “Jim has been there from the beginning of the 2010 Games efforts & although his experience will be missed, I am confident that Tandy will keep the board on task during this interim period.”

The 12-member Foundation board meets monthly and oversees the independent non-profit organization. Ms. Patrick has served on the Executive Committee of the Foundation since its inception. She is a Member with the law firm of Greenebaum, Doll & McDonald, where she serves as chair of the Real Estate Team and co-chair of the Equine Law Team. In addition, Ms. Patrick serves as chair of the Kentucky Horse Park Commission.

"Jim Host has long played an extraordinary role in the development of the Kentucky Horse Park, going back to its inception in the late sixties,” stated John Nicholson, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park. “As Chair of the Kentucky Horse Park Commission, Tandy Patrick's talent & leadership played a critical part in securing the World Games. We should all be gratified that the Foundation will be the beneficiary of Tandy’s remarkable energy, intelligence & devotion."

“I am honored and excited to take on the role of interim chairman for the Foundation,” said Patrick. “Jim Host is a tough act to follow, but I am confident we will continue his legacy & build toward this terrific event.”

The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park, are the world championships of the 8 equestrian disciplines recognized by the FEI, & are held every 4 years. The Games have never before been held outside of Europe; nor have all 8 disciplines ever previously been held together at a single site - both firsts that will be achieved at the Kentucky Horse Park. The 2010 Games are expected to have a statewide economic impact of $150 million. It's anticipated that more than 600,000 spectators will attend the 16-day competition.

Members of the State Transportation Board invite citizens to attend any of the hearings & provide input on the tentative funding program. The board & ADOT staff will consider public comment as they work to complete the updated 5-year program prior to the start of the new fiscal year on July 1st.

Speed or alcohol does not appear to be factor in the death of a 3 year old girl from the accident occuring April 1st at the Christopher Creek Campgrounds. The girl ran out into the roadway as the driver of the truck, who never saw the girl coming as he, was approaching the scene.

Arizona Department of Public Safety Investigators are looking into a collision that was caused when a 2002 Ford Escort heading northbound on SR 288 moved right, slammed into a barrier wall, went over the wall & vaulted off the roadway into the Salt River.

18 year old Mathew Stuve of Globe/Miami became trapped in the vehicle after it hit the water. He died at the scene. His body was recovered with the assistance of the Gila County Sheriffs Office Dive team.

18 year old Randal Philpot of Globe/Miami was also in the vehicle as it sank into the river however he was able to get to shore. He was treated for his injuries at Maricopa Medical Center.

The accident happened at about 8:30 am on April 1st. It was unclear who was at the wheel at the time of the collision but the vehicle was registered to Randal Philpot’s father.
Alcohol or drugs may have been a factor and the investigation is ongoing.

1 on 1

Tomorrow, we will see the top seeds, the Florida Gators (Midwest) & the Ohio St. Buckeyes (South) in a Championship rematch, of sorts. Albeit, in a different sport but a showdown none the least. If you recall on January 8th, during the Tostitos BCS National Championship, Florida whooped Ohio State's ass, 41-14. After the skills we have seen from these team's during March Madness, this should be one hell of a Championship game.
