Fossil Creek Closure Extended

Continuing de-construction efforts on the Childs-Irving Hydroelectric facilities have prompted an extension of the closure affecting Forest Road 708 (Fossil Creek Road). The closure, requested by Arizona Public Service (APS), began Oct. 30th, 2006 & will now run through Dec. 31st, 2006, Monday - Friday. Please note that this closure will severely limit access to the upper reaches of Fossil Creek during this period.

Closure location:

The east end of the closure for FR 708 will be located approx. 1/2 mile west of the entrance to the Upper Fossil Springs Trailhead near Strawberry. The west end of the closure will be located approx. 1 mile east of the intersection of FR 502 & FR 708.

Severe construction traffic restrictions will occur on FR 708 from Hwy. 260 near Camp Verde to the intersection of FR 502 until Dec. 31st, due to heavy equipment & truck movement. Traffic diversions to Strawberry or extended delays on this stretch of forest road may occur.

This temporary closure is requested by APS in connection with the decommissioning of the power plant & facilities at Fossil Creek. This closure will affect the Tonto & Coconino national forests. APS crews will construct gates for each end of the closure & provide signs at the gates as well as on upper Fossil Creek Road & on FR 708 at the Camp Verde end.

The Payson Ranger District office can be contacted by telephone at 602-928-7900 or visit fs.fed.us/r3/tonto.

Millions In GADA Bonds Issued

The Greater Arizona Development Authority (GADA) has issued $36.52 million of Series 2006B bonds. The bonds will be used to fund loans to 6 borrowers, 3 of which are for fire fighting facilities in growing areas.

GADA provides low-cost financing for infrastructure projects to communities, counties, tribes & special districts throughout the state. GADA's credit strength & contribution of bond sale costs allows local governments to borrow at interest rates well below those at which they could merit on their own.

The funding was issued to:

City of Show Low - $8,370,000
The funds will bring improvements to the airport hanger & road improvements to Old Linden Boulevard & Central Avenue. The City will also purchase 8 new police vehicles.
Town of Quartzsite - $7,215,000
The funds will consolidate existing loans, & finance sewerand water capacity projects. The sewer project (already completed) involved extensions to the sewer system. The water projects will increase the Town's water storage capacity & extend water lines to the Town's south side.
City of Somerton - $6,885,000
The funds will finance street improvements in the older, established sections of the City & add a traffic signal on U.S. Highway 95 & Main Street. The Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department will also acquire an aerial ladder truck to improve service to the community's increasing number of multi-story apartments.

Maricopa Fire District of Pinal County - $3,200,000
The funds will assist development of a new emergency dispatch system due to the community's growing population. In addition, it will help cover the costs of constructing new fire stations.
Drexel Heights Fire District of Pima County - $1,350,000
The funds will help relocate 4 fire stations in order to meet service demands & improve response times. In addition, it will fund replacement of fire apparatus & ambulances, upgrade the district's communication systems, & the remodeling of existing facilities.

Dirk Koetter Cut

Athletic director Lisa Love made the announcement tonight after the team's annual awards banquet. Even after a win at the Insight Bowl in 2005, the unimpressive winning seasons were not enough for him to keep his job until his contract ended in 2009. With his firing he will still be paid the $2.85 million that was for the 3-year extension he had just signed. Expect tuition fees to skyrocket so the Athletic Director can pay for her doing. Bruce Snyder was given the same treatment, when Koetter was hired. The lesson here for future ASU coaches is, have a stellar regular season and don't win a Bowl game. The direction this Athletic Director has now is, win a bowl game, find a new coaching job. I have no Love for Lisa after these bonehead moves of hers.

The Cardinals Blow Like A Ho

That describes the Arizona Cardinals (2-9) after losing 31-26, to the Vikings (5-6). Of course, this is what you'd expect from one of the 3 WORST team in the NFL. After starting strong with J.J. Arrington returning the initial kickoff 99 yards to strike first, it didn't take long for them to lose that lead. In what looked like a last-minute Champion style drive to win the game, ended in the usual dismal effort. Earlier in the 4th, after gaining points from a fumble near the End Zone from the Vikings, resulting in Adrian Wilson returning a 99-yard touchdown, they actually scored another TD. At this point, you'd think they were playing NFL quality ball & not kids playing Pop Warner football for the first time. Neil Rackers kicked a great offsides kick allowing the Cardinals to obtain the ball and go for four final flings to the End Zone with seconds remaining. On the final throw, the Vikings caught the ball, ending the hopes for a victory by these boobs of the NFL. There is no chance of switching QB's as there isn't a chance of Warner accepting any help if a cure for this geezer's arm is found via stem cell research any time soon. Let's face it, these turkeys are done.

Separate Those Ashes

The City of Globe is urging residents to separate their ashes, even cooled, from their fireplaces to reduce any hazard to members of the sanitation crew & vehicles. This was the 4th election since the introduction of Clean Elections, & participation has increased each cycle. Just over $5 million in Clean Elections funds was distributed to candidates. This represents about 2-3rds of all money spent in state candidate races. Clean Elections candidates are not allowed to raise money from outside sources, & the winners will enter office not owing their election to funding by any special interest group.

Arizona’s Clean Elections Law is a national model for public funding of candidates for state office.

The mission of the Clean Elections Institute, a nonpartisan, nonprofit corporation, is to educate elected officials & voters about the law, monitor the Citizens Clean Elections Commission’s rule-making & enforcement activities, defend the law, & advocate for improvements & expansion of the law to other elected offices.

ADOT Thanksgiving Roadwork News

ADOT & its contractors will not have any construction closures in place on state highways over the Thanksgiving weekend.

ADOT Director Victor Mendez is urging motorists to concentrate on safe driving & to allow for extra travel time over the holiday weekend in anticipation of heavier-than-normal traffic. “With increased traffic, especially leading up to Thanksgiving & during return trips, a lot of the responsibility for safety falls to drivers," Mendez said. "We can’t say it enough. Take your time, don’t speed, refuse to drink & drive, make sure everyone buckles up & be alert for any changing weather conditions.”

Although ADOT is stopping construction on its highway projects across the state over the long weekend to minimize the impact on holiday travel, Mendez stressed safety, especially near existing work zones.

In an effort to reduce the number of crashes during the holiday, ADOT, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) & Governor’s Office of Highway Safety all urge drivers to avoid distractions, take some extra time for travel & drive sober. Law enforcement officers will be out in force during the holiday weekend in an effort to stop impaired drivers.

For more info about any highway restrictions across Arizona, visit ADOT’s traveler site at az511.com or dial 511.

Hopi Tribe & FEMA Aid Agreement Signed

A formal agreement between the Hopi Tribe & the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been signed, clearing the path for federal disaster aid to help Hopi communities recover from last summer's monsoons. The signing, which took place yesterday, at the tribal government center in Kykotsmovi Village, enables FEMA aid to be released to the tribe to help cover eligible costs for storm damage ranging from washed-out roads to an important flood-damaged spring. The agreement was signed for the Hopi Tribe by Vice Chairman Todd Honyaoma. Lee Rosenberg, the federal coordinating officer who oversees the disaster recovery, signed for FEMA.

FEMA personnel will work with staff of the Hopi Tribe on a government-to-government basis to review disaster recovery projects. FEMA covers 75% of an eligible project's cost, with the Hopi Tribe providing the remaining 25%. FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards & effectively manages federal response & recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains 1st responders, & manages the National Flood Insurance Program & the U.S. Fire Administration.

Second Win Of The Season

As it stands the Cardinals are now not the worst in the NFL. With a win today they are tied with the Raiders & Lions at a 2-8 record this season. The teams started the game with 0-0 on the board in the 1st Quarter, The Cards took the game 10-0 to the Half, came back, scored a TD 4 minutes in to the 3rd Quarter & gave up a FG to the Lions, bringing the game to 17-3. In the 4th, the Lions scored too little too late by finally reaching the End Zone, changing the scoreboard 17-10, & making that the final score. E. James almost reached his first 100 yard rushing game today as a Cardinal, he ended up with an impressive 96 yards. M. Leinart was 19 for 29 in pass completions for 233 yards. So, after all the comments I have made in the past few weeks, I say congratulations to gaining & maintaining a lead to the end. Now, keep it up.

Phelps Dodge News

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. & Phelps Dodge Corp. announced they have signed a definitive merger agreement under which FCX will acquire Phelps Dodge for approx., $25.9 billion in cash & stock, creating the world’s largest publicly traded copper company.

The combined company will be a new industry leader with large, long-lived, geographically diverse assets & significant proven & probable reserves of copper, gold & molybdenum. The company’s increased scale of operations, management depth & strengthened cash flow will provide an improved platform to capitalize on growth opportunities in the global market.

The combined company will be the largest North American-based mining company. The company will enjoy an excellent cost position, long reserve life, a diversified geographic footprint, & an attractive growth profile. FCX currently operates the world-class Grasberg mine, located in Papua, Indonesia, which is the world’s largest copper & gold mine in terms of reserves. Phelps Dodge has mines in operation or under development in N. & S. America, & Africa, including the world-class Tenke Fungurume development project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The combined company will represent one of the most geographically diversified portfolios of operating, expansion & growth projects in the copper mining industry.

At The Half

In a surprise to everyone, the Arizona Cardinals are leading the Detroit Lions, 10-0. In the second half we will see the Cards get comfortable with this lead and blow it. It is a pattern that has gone on far too long with this team. I would be happy to write an article later this evening saying the Cardinals have two wins. At this point, it would be a wonderful change of pace. I just wonder if the Phoenix television media will start the one-week hype machine after all their talk or will they be more realistic and say that this is just the second win lets see if it holds. That's how it is, they talk about the Cardinals every year as it is their season to shine, during the pre-season games. As they get wins in the pre-season, it's all one big, get on their knees & suck & swallow, then when they lose in the regular season, it's all shame, shame, shame. I guess you could call the Phoenix television media as a "Prison Bitch" scorned.

And while I'm at it, FUCK the ownership that is held by the greedy Bidwell family. Look at the team's track record, there is a reason they stay well below the salary cap every year. Also, take a look at the other expenditures the family has done in compared to the team's expenses for a shot to win. The heat must be on, the last couple of years they have actually spent some money, for a couple of close to retirement players & to keep a few quality players instead of shipping them out.

New Agreement Enhances Border Security

A new, bi-national agreement signed will improve law enforcement communication across the border & aid in information sharing to combat border crime. Gov. Napolitano & Sonora Governor Eduardo Bours Castelo signed the agreement in Puerto Peasco, Sonora, Mexico, during the fall plenary session of the Arizona-Mexico Commission.

The original agreement between the states of Arizona & Sonora was signed in June 2005; this new agreement expands & enhances that ongoing effort. It further defines systems for information sharing between the 2 states' law enforcement agencies. It also creates a Cross-Border Communications Committee whose members will implement border-wide protocols for using communications systems. Membership will consist of the directors of Public Safety in each state, as well as law enforcement agency chiefs or designees from Nogales, Douglas and San Luis, Arizona; & from Nogales, Agua Prieta & San Luis, Sonora.

"Sonora faces many of the same immigration-related criminal issues that Arizona must deal with," said Gov. Napolitano. "In June 2005, we launched an unprecedented level of law enforcement cooperation between the 2 states. Our efforts are paying off, & the impact is beginning to be felt."

In the last year, the 2 states' Departments of Public Safety began sharing information on suspected human traffickers, drug dealers & other offenders who engage in vehicle theft & the manufacture & sale of fraudulent government documents. Since then, in Arizona:

* Southern Arizona Vehicle Theft Enforcement Detail has conducted 64 details, recovered more than 230 stolen vehicles; made 76 felony arrests & turned over nearly 300 undocumented immigrants to federal authorities in the United States. Vehicles are often stolen so that criminal organizations can use them to transport individuals or contraband, then abandoned a short time later.

* Arizona DPS has installed License Plate Reader devices, enabling law enforcement to capture more than 200,000 plates & recover more than $3 million in stolen vehicles.

* Financial Crimes Task Force, led by Arizona DPS, has seized nearly $5 million in international money transfers made by criminal organizations. The technique, known as "damming warrants," is used to stop the flow of funds used to finance human & drug trafficking organizations. Additionally, the Task Force has made dozens of arrests.

* Arizona Fraudulent ID Task Force has cross-trained Sonora law enforcement to recognize fake identification cards & other documents. The Task Force continues to conduct numerous undercover operations, & has confiscated hundreds of fraudulent social security cards, driver's licenses, permanent resident cards, Mexican ID cards & other documents.

I Couldn't Make This Up

This e-mail was sent to us earlier & I found it rather amusing so I thought I'd share this with you. Enjoy:

From: Marwan Ahmad

Subject: Muslim and Arab communities protest Mayer Gordon support for Israel and removal of a Muslim/Arab member from Human Relation Commission

Israel invaded Beit-Hanoun and killed more than 50 people, many of them women and children. This travesty of an experiment in collective human torture, is sanctioned, supported, condoned and blessed by the United States, US even vetoed a very mild Security Council resolution against the event.

Lately, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon attend a pro-Israel rally that was raising funds for Israel, Mayor Gordon has also removed a Palestinian Muslim ”Marwan Ahmad” from the city board of human relation commission because he “Marwan” spoke out against the policies of the state of Israel.

We call on the publics who don't dare open their mouths, write out their shock, register their objections, express their disgust, and squeak out their "no's" lest they suggest that Israel's apparatus of inhumanity is an abomination on the face of the earth, to participate in Friday’s protest against Israel Policies, the massacre of Beit-Hanoun and the removal of Marwan Ahmad.

Date: Friday Nov. 17, 2006

Time: 3:00 PM

Place: In front of Phoenix city hall building, 200 W. Washington Duration: 1.5 hour.

Media Contact: Mohammad Riyad 602-568-2278

Great American Smokeout®

Arizona smokers are facing a new new incentive to quit the habit. The passage of Propositions 201 & 203 will make it difficult to light up in a lot of places & will cause a number of smokers to ease back as a one-person smokestack. But don't fret, the Arizona Department of Health Services’ anti-tobacco program has the tools to help ease the transition to a healthier smoke-free lifestyle.

“This year more than ever, I urge smokers to join the Great American Smokeout®,” said Health Director Susan Gerard, referring to the American Cancer Society’s annual smokeout event challenge on Nov. 16th. “Regardless of your motivation, this is a golden opportunity for you to join a powerful local & national movement for positive change.”

The health department’s Tobacco Education & Prevention Program (TEPP) provides statewide programs to assist in smoking cessation. The state’s anti-tobacco program works with local Arizona communities to help people to succeed at becoming tobacco free.

For information about smoking cessation classes & cessation counseling services around the state visit ASHline.org or call 1-800-55-66-222.

Additional materials for media including Cessation Tips & Fast Facts about health improvements for a smoker’s body when they quit are available at ashline.org.

Of Mice And Schools

The following was sent over to us (KRDE 94.1) to announce in all our means in regards to complaints Pima Butte Elementary received pertaining to mice and their feces found in the building. The following letter was sent from the Maricopa Unified School District:

Maricopa Unified School District #20

Re: Pima Butte Concerns

During the week of November 6, 2006, there were concerns voiced by some parents and some teachers at Pima Butte Elementary about the presence of mice and their feces in the building. The School District doubled their cleaning schedule to reinforce their efforts.

A plan was developed to monitor and sustain all cleaning efforts. Also, additional strategies were implemented to reduce and eliminate any presence of mice. University Pest Services was advised to increase efforts to assure minimal rodent activity.

On November 14, 2006 a meeting was held with the Pinal County Health Department and the detailed report follows:

Pinal County Health Officials are investigating multiple complaints of mice in Pima Butte Elementary School of the Maricopa Unified School District. In their preliminary investigation, Pinal County officials have discovered no evidence of an imminent or impending health threat. To this date, health officials have not received reports of any disease in students or staff that could be attributed to the presence of mice.

Pinal County Health Officials met with Dr. John Flores, Superintendent of the Maricopa Unified School District and his staff to discuss an action plan to control the population of mice in school facilities. Pima Butte Elementary has begun to take the following actions to control, monitor and document any problem and any future problems:

* Place more traps in all areas of the school.
* Develop a log of locations that mice and droppings are found in traps.
* Properly sanitize, empty and employ more trapping measures.
* Eliminate food sources by limiting food to the cafeteria only.
* Eliminate materials that can be used for nesting.
* Require staff immediately report any mouse droppings to administration.
* Participation in ongoing inspection from the Pinal County Division of Environmental Health.

These measures were developed by the Maricopa Unified School District with the assistance of Pinal Co. Health Officials. Pinal Co. Health Officials will continue to monitor the conditions at the school to ensure that no health threat exists. If at any point a significant health threat exists, Public Health Official will take whatever action is necessary to protect the health & safety of students & staff.
