Vince Gill To Help Build New Orleans Playground

The Academy of Country Music(R) & The Home Depot(R), the world's largest home improvement retailer, announced that country music superstar Vince Gill will join volunteers from The Home Depot and the surrounding community to construct a new KaBOOM! playground in one day at the relocated campus of the International School of Louisiana (ISL) in New Orleans on September 25th, 2006. The playground is being built in honor of Gill, who was the 2006 recipient of the Academy of Country Music/The Home Depot Humanitarian Award at the 41st Annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

In its 5th year, the Humanitarian Award recognizes artists who serve others, have a generous spirit & help build the dreams of those in need. In addition to recognition at the awards show, the Humanitarian Award recipient is honored with a KaBOOM! playground donated by The Home Depot in the city of his choice. Gill requested that his playground be built in New Orleans in order to help the city rebuild.

"It is truly an honor to be able to build this playground in New Orleans & give the children at the International School of Louisiana areason to smile and a place to play," said Gill. "Given the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, it is an obvious need for the community."

Prior to Hurricane Katrina, ISL operated out of 2 undersized rented facilities, neither of which had adequate playspaces. Both buildings were destroyed in the flooding caused by the storm, & the school was relocated to a former Orleans Parish school building with no playground equipment onsite. The new playground being built at ISL will provide a safe & funplace to play for almost 400 students currently enrolled at the school.

"Many of us in the country community are still hit hard when were member the devastation of Hurricane Katrina," commented Bob Romeo, Academy of Country Music executive director. "It is wonderful to see how many of our artists are out there still trying to bring awareness to these hard-hit communities, & by Vince Gill picking New Orleans as the site for his KaBOOM! playground build, it is just another example of the dedication he & our community have to helping one another."

Gill was selected to receive the Academy of Country Music/The Home Depot Humanitarian Award by a special blue-ribbon committee comprised of executives in the country music industry as well as local & national philanthropic leaders for his ongoing community service & charitable giving of his time & talent. Past recipients of the Humanitarian Award include Reba McEntire, Lonestar, Martina McBride & Neal McCoy.

"In recognition of The Home Depot Humanitarian Award, we are pleased to partner with KaBOOM! to build a playground in honor of Vince, an individual who shares his valuable time unselfishly to help others," said Roger Adams, senior vice president, Marketing, The Home Depot. "As part of The Home Depot's ongoing commitment to rebuild the Gulf region affected by the hurricanes, Team Depot associate volunteers will work side by side with Vince to not only build the playground, but to provide a gathering space for the entire community."

The playground design was created with input from children from the community who attended a "Design Day" event on July 19th. The children's drawings will be used to create the final design for the playground, which will be constructed in just one day this fall by hundreds of volunteers, including Gill.

Lake Powell Developer To Pay $90,000

Attorney General Terry Goddard & ADEQ Director Steve Owens announced a $90,000 settlement with Greenehaven Development Corporation & its subsidiaries. The settlement resolves a lawsuit charging violations of Arizona water quality laws.

Greenehaven is the developer of Lake Powell View Investment Properties, a large residential & commercial development outside Page. The lawsuit filed in Maricopa County Superior Court charged that Greenehaven violated Arizona law by failing to secure sewage treatment permits, failing to follow regulations governing sewage collection systems & failing to adhere to drinking water testing requirements.

In April 2004, ADEQ inspectors discovered that Greenehaven started building a wastewater treatment plant & drinking water distribution system to serve portions of its Lake Powell View Investment Properties without securing the appropriate permits. Additionally, the company was operating an additional wastewater treatment plant without the required permit from ADEQ.

The settlement agreement requires Greenehaven to close its wastewater treatment plant, construct new sewer lines to divert wastewater from the Greenehaven community to the City of Page wastewater treatment plant within 2 years, & pay $90,000 in civil penalties. The settlement is subject to Court approval. Greenehaven must submit payment to the State within 30 days of the judgment's effective date.

Legislation to Preserve Fossil Creek Unveiled

U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01) today joined Arizona Senator John McCain in introducing legislation to designate Fossil Creek a "Wild & Scenic River," a classification that would provide the creek's stream flow with legal protections to prevent it from being dammed or otherwise threatened in the future.

"Having seen Fossil Creek firsthand, I am amazed by its spectacular pools & cascades, its unique plant life, & its deep history, making it a vital treasure not only for Arizonans, but for all Americans," said Congressman Renzi. "Today's action will ensure that one of Arizona's most precious natural jewels is enjoyed & preserved for generations to come. I am delighted to join Senator McCain in introducing this legislation, & appreciate the bipartisan support of my colleagues from the Arizona delegation in working to protect & revitalize our state's natural environment."

"Fossil Creek is a thing of beauty, with its picturesque scenery, lush riparian ecosystem, unique geological features, & deep iridescent blue pools & waterfalls," says Senator John McCain. "Fossil Creek is a unique Arizona treasure, & would benefit greatly from the protection & recognition offered through Wild & Scenic designation."

For nearly 100 years, the vast majority of the water on Fossil Creek has been diverted to supply area residents with a renewable energy source, but in 1999 Arizona Public Service (APS) made the historic decision to retire the dam facilities & restore downstream flow of water to Fossil Creek.

Since then, Fossil Creek has experienced a rebirth, & is now flourishing with deep iridescent pools, waterfalls, plant life, & fish, making it one of Arizona's most unique & treasured places. The Wild and Scenic Rivers designation would permanently preserve the free-flowing condition of Fossil Creek, ensuring that the creek is never dammed again.

The U.S. Forest Service has determined that Fossil Creek meets the eligibility criteria for the Wild & Scenic Rivers System, and Congressman Renzi has worked with Senator McCain, in addition to various other local stakeholders to ensure widespread support for the Fossil Creek designation. The legislation is supported by the communities of the Town of Camp Verde, the City of Cottonwood, & the Yavapai-Apache Tribe.

Fossil Creek forms at the base of the Mogollon Rim near Strawberry & runs through 14 miles of the Coconino & Tonto National Forests & empties into the Verde River near Camp Verde.

Renzi Announces Hearing on Native American Homeownership

At the request of U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01), the House Subcommittee on Housing & Community Opportunity of the Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing entitled "Removing Barriers to Homeownership for Native Americans" at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 31st, at the Cliff Castle Convention Center in Camp Verde, AZ. Congressman Renzi, a member of the Subcommittee, will participate in the hearing & will be joined by other members of the subcommittee, as well as representatives from a variety of federal agencies involved with Indian housing issues.

"The lack of good jobs, the skyrocketing cost of housing, & complicated title issues & red tape, have pushed the dream of homeownership further & further out of reach for Native American families around Arizona, & throughout the country," said Rep. Renzi. "This trend is unacceptable, & must be turned around. I applaud the Subcommittee for its decision to hold this important hearing on Monday, & look forward to expanding homeownership for more Native American families throughout the nation."

The hearing will focus on the unique relationship between Native American Tribes & the U.S. Government & the housing situation on reservations. It will also address the barriers to home ownership for Native Americans & the possible solutions that would improve the process of obtaining titles and financing for housing units. Despite existing programs & efforts to remove existing barriers, the title process continues to impede homeownership for Native Americans.

Scheduled witnesses include: President Joe Shirley of the Navajo Nation; Chairwoman Kathy Kitcheyan of the San Carlos Apache Tribe; & Chairman Jamie Fullmer of the Yavapai-Apache Nation; Orlando Cabrera, Assistant Secretary, Public Housing & Indian Affairs, Dept. of Housing & Urban Development; Edward Browning, Arizona Rural Development State Director, Rural Housing Service, Dept. of Agriculture; Alan Anspach, Regional Director for the Western Region, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Dept. of the Interior; along with other representatives from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Dept. of Housing & Urban Development, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, & the National American Indian Housing Council.

Yates Knew What She Did

Police officers who testified at the hearing said Andrea Yates offered a confession without hesitation & even told them where to find clean glasses in a cabinet so they could get her husband a glass of water.

"She looked me directly in my eyes & said, 'I know what I've done,"' said Houston police Officer Frank Stumpo.

No Responsibility:
On the CBS show "60 Minutes" on Dec. 30th, 2001, Russell Yates said he stands by his wife, and contended that if she had received competent psychiatric care, their children would be alive today.

The Call & Officer Arrival Report:
The sounds of Yates' heavy breathing on the phone filled the courtroom as prosecutors played a recording of the 911 call, made at 9:48 a.m. on June 20, 2001. Yates spoke calmly to the 911 operator, but would not say why she needed police.

"Hi. Uh - I need a police officer at home,'' she told the operator. After being asked why, she said only, "I just need them to come ... I just need a police officer.''

Yates said she was alone. When the operator asked if her husband was standing beside her, Yates responded sharply, "No.''

"You sure you're alone?'' the operator asked.

"No, my kids are here,'' Yates finally said.

"How old are your children?'' the operator asked.

"They're 7, 5, 3, 2 and 6 months,'' Yates said in a flat voice.

The operator who took the call, Dorene Stubblefield, told the jury this morning that she felt that Yates understood what she was saying, even though she wouldn't answer some questions.

The first Houston police officer to arrive at the home at 942 Beachcomber told jurors that Yates' hair & clothes were dripping wet when she answered his knock at the door.

"I asked her why she needed the police. She just responded that, 'I just killed my kids,''' Officer David L. Knapp recalled. "She was very wide-eyed, kind of like in an excited state.'' Yates then led Knapp to a bedroom. The carpet in the hallway was so wet that it made squishing sounds as they walked on it, he recalled.

Knapp said he also noticed 2 sets of wet footprints - an adult's & a child's - covering the tile floor in the living room.

In the bedroom, Knapp discovered 4 of the children's bodies on a bed, covered by a sheet. He recalled seeing a white, frothy substance coming from 3 of the victims' noses & mouths, indicating their lungs had burst.

As he inspected the bodies, Knapp said, Yates stood behind him in the bedroom doorway & said nothing.

A 5th child - 7-year-old Noah - would eventually be found, face-down in the filthy, brown water of the bathtub, where all of the children had died.

After the gruesome discovery, Knapp told Yates to sit on a love seat in the living room while he called for help. "She had no problem following those instructions,'' Knapp said.

Yates eventually handed over her driver's license & later signed a consent form allowing officers to search her residence.

Why Does The U.S. Government & The FCC Hate WW2 Vets?

Ken Burns new seven part series titled "The War," has the language used by servicemen & others during World War 2. However, with the U.S. government's crackdown on media's so-called indecency, backed by the religious reich, will hamper veterans from sharing their stories. As a result of a new law signed last month by President George W. Bush, stations would be fined $325,000 per violation, 10 times the original amount. The FCC has violated it's original intent & they have long overstepped their bounds. On their "About The FCC" page this is what it says: "The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent United States government agency, directly responsible to Congress. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable." Now look at their actions in recent years, & try to tell me they have not gone too far. They are now combing through old sports footage with people in the crowd to listen for any swearing in the background. That is insane. They have frozen anything doing with technical upgrades for the radio & television industries. It's clear to me that when on a television show that's played after school, a discussion in graphic detail is not fined but a fart joke is.

If you don't like it, complain to the individuals who have majority control in the Government & to the individual that appointed these tools to the board of insanity. In other words, FUCK THE FCC!!!

Gov. Napolitano Appoints New Corporation Commission Commissioner

Gov. Janet Napolitano today announced she's chosen former legislator Barry Wong to fill an empty seat on the Arizona Corporation Commission. The position was vacated this week by Republican Marc Spitzer, who resigned to take a job with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Wong will serve the remainder of Spitzer's term, which expires in January, 2007. A full-term replacement will be on the November ballot, & take office in the new year.

The Commission will have to tackle critical issues in the next several months, including a vote on mandating the use of more renewable energy to reduce the state's reliance on fossil fuels. While in the legislature, Wong worked on measures on issues affecting solar & renewable energy sources.

"While reviewing possible candidates for the Corporation Commission, Barry emerged as an obvious choice," said Napolitano. "I have no doubt that he has the integrity and knowledge to be an advocate for Arizonans in cases before the Commission for the next several months."

Wong, a Republican, represented North-Central Phoenix as a state lawmaker from 1993 - 2000. A graduate of the University of Arizona College of Law, Wong is now a lawyer & business consultant at his own firm. He was previously a vice president for CIGNA, specializing in government relations for the company's 10 western states. He's also involved in community organizations, serving as a member of the Arizona Asian American Association, The Fiesta Bowl Committee, & an Honorary Commander Alumni for Luke Air Force Base's 56th Fighter Wing.

Wong is eligible to take the position immediately.

Kyl said, “I continue to believe that Congress must address immigration reform in a comprehensive manner that starts with securing the border. There is much that Congress can do immediately to address our border security needs. That is why we are making this request to the President today. Emergency funding for border security will send a clear message that the government is seriously committed to the enforcement of its border.”

Sen. Cornyn, said, “While I am still very much committed to a comprehensive immigration reform bill, I believe that for the legislative process to move forward, the White House & the Congress must restore public confidence in the government’s ability - and will - to enforce the immigration laws. It is for this reason that we have sought the President’s support for a supplemental in our letter today, & we are hopeful that it will re-energize discussions between all parties in our effort to reach a compromise on this very important issue.”

Among the areas that Kyl & Cornyn seek additional funding for are:

500 Border Patrol Agents: $135 million

1,300 Detention Beds: $45.5 million
Employee Verification System: $400 million
Fencing and Vehicle Barriers: $1.829 billion
USVISIT Entry-Exit: $193 million
800 Immigration & Customs Enforcement Agents: $100 million
New Capital Equipment: $973 million

TOTAL: $3.676 billion
