New Dept. of Health Services Bureau Chief
The Az. Dept. of Health Services announced the appointment of Wayne Tormala as Bureau Chief of the state’s Tobacco Education & Prevention Program. Tormala, Community Initiatives Coordinator for the City of Phoenix, has earned national recognition as a champion of human service programs in the public & private sector.
Tormala’s 35-year career has focused on youth & senior services, mental health, HIV/AIDS care & prevention, environmental conservation, world hunger & social welfare. He's served as the Community Initiatives Coordinator for City of Phoenix since 1997. He also worked in leadership roles for the Arizona AIDS Foundation, Bread for the World, & the Washington D.C.-based Institute for Policy Studies.
Tormala’s many honors include: Recognition by Housing & Urban Development (HUD) for the City of Phoenix’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program, an invitation from New York’s Mayor Bloomberg to participate in a national conference about outreach strategies for people with disabilities, recognition by national associations for city management for the City of Phoenix’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) model, & selection by the Heritage Foundation to address its national summit about successfully reaching “hard-to-reach” populations.
Tormala will begin at the Health Department’s Tobacco Education & Prevention Program this spring.
