Apache Junction PD Child ID System
The Apache Junction Police Dept believes that children are a very important part of the community. They also believe that every child should have identification information. It’s like insurance -- it’s there if you need it, but you hope you’ll never have to use it. When faced with the possibility of a family abduction, a non-family abduction, a runaway, or lost child situation, there is nothing more valuable to law enforcement. The police department wants this information to be available to all parents & guardians.
According to the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention, most family abductions involve children under the age of 6. However, “acquaintance” & “stranger” abduction victims usually involve female teenagers. We may think of getting our young children fingerprinted, but how often do we think about our teenage children? Regrettably many parents of teens would not have this identification information available should the unthinkable happen.
The police department has acquired a new Child ID system, which utilizes a computer, a camera & a fingerprint scanning device. This system produces a printout of the child’s information, photograph, 10-digit fingerprints, & 2 laminated ID cards.
On the 1st Saturday of each month from 9am - noon, Child ID is available free of charge at the Apache Junction Police Department, 1001 N. Idaho Rd. Included with the ID process is DNA swabbing, which involves collecting saliva from inside the cheek of the child. This information is given to the parent to keep.
