Grand Canyon Grandeur
Grand Canyon Grandeur: Early Paintings and Prints from the Hays Collection opened Nov. 18th, through March 18th, 2007, featuring over 40 images by 19 superb artists.
As of Nov. 18th, the Mesa Southwest Museum is pleased to present an exhibition of some of the greatest artists who ever tackled the Grand Canyon as their subject. Many artists returned many times to try & capture the canyon's essence. Thomas Moran, one of America's greatest landscape painters, was one. Gunnar Widforss, who took up residence at the canyon & produced some of its most memorable images, was another. Carl Oscar Borg returned again & again to record the enchanted landscape. Both Borg & E.I. Couse sometimes placed Native Americans in their images of the canyon. Louis Akin's well known for his paints of the Grand Canyon, Gustave Baumann's celebrated as one of America's greatest printmakers, & Hiroshi Yoshida brought a Japanese aesthetic to his work at the canyon. These are just a few of the artists & images you'll see on display.
On Jan. 10th, at 7 p.m., the Mesa Southwest Museum Theater will host "A Conversation with the Collector," featuring Mr. Abe Hays, collector of Grand Canyon Grandeur. This event is Free for all.
