Fire Destroys Motor Home On U.S. Highway 188 in Wheatfields
Travel on U.S. Highway 188 & the Lavin Wash vicinity in Wheatfields was temporarily interrupted when a fire destroyed a 38 foot, 1988 Overland Motor Home this evening at approx., 6 p.m. The motor home was being driven by the vehicle owner Mr. Herbert Penrod of Tucson & was en-route home after spending the weekend at Roosevelt Lake with his family.
Mr. Penrod pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road after noticing the engine was overheating. Upon investigating he found a fire in the engine compartment but was unsuccessful in extinguishing it. Consequently the fire spread & destroyed the motor home.
Tri-City Fire officials do not have an estimate of the total dollar loss to the vehicle. Canyon Fire Dept. assisted Tri-City on scene. Officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety & the Gila County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control.
