2006 Longest Yard Fall Classic
Congressmen Rick Renzi (AZ-1), Tim Ryan (OH-17), Bill Shuster (PA-9) & Kendrick Meek (FL-17) announced that the 2nd Annual "Longest Yard" Fall Classic Football game between Members of Congress - "The Inmates" - & the United States Capitol Police - "The Guards" - will take place on tomorrow at Gallaudet University at approx., 8 p.m. Two dozen Members of Congress, both Democrats & Republicans, will be participating in the game, & will be coached by former Nebraska Head Coach (now Rep.) Tom Osborne. All proceeds will go toward the Capitol Police Memorial Fund to help the families of slain Capitol Police Officers.
The United States Capitol Police (USCP) Memorial Fund was created after Detective John Gibson & Private First Class Jacob Chestnut were killed in the line of duty. Established by Congress on Aug. 7th, 1998 (P.L. 105-223, H.R. 4354) the fund was originally intended to provide financial assistance to the widows & children of Officers Gibson & Chestnut. However, in Nov. 2005, the purpose of the fund was expanded to benefit the surviving spouses & minor children of any USCP employee killed in the line of duty, which now includes the family of Officer Eney who was killed in a training accident.
