Legislation to Preserve Fossil Creek Unveiled

U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-01) today joined Arizona Senator John McCain in introducing legislation to designate Fossil Creek a "Wild & Scenic River," a classification that would provide the creek's stream flow with legal protections to prevent it from being dammed or otherwise threatened in the future.

"Having seen Fossil Creek firsthand, I am amazed by its spectacular pools & cascades, its unique plant life, & its deep history, making it a vital treasure not only for Arizonans, but for all Americans," said Congressman Renzi. "Today's action will ensure that one of Arizona's most precious natural jewels is enjoyed & preserved for generations to come. I am delighted to join Senator McCain in introducing this legislation, & appreciate the bipartisan support of my colleagues from the Arizona delegation in working to protect & revitalize our state's natural environment."

"Fossil Creek is a thing of beauty, with its picturesque scenery, lush riparian ecosystem, unique geological features, & deep iridescent blue pools & waterfalls," says Senator John McCain. "Fossil Creek is a unique Arizona treasure, & would benefit greatly from the protection & recognition offered through Wild & Scenic designation."

For nearly 100 years, the vast majority of the water on Fossil Creek has been diverted to supply area residents with a renewable energy source, but in 1999 Arizona Public Service (APS) made the historic decision to retire the dam facilities & restore downstream flow of water to Fossil Creek.

Since then, Fossil Creek has experienced a rebirth, & is now flourishing with deep iridescent pools, waterfalls, plant life, & fish, making it one of Arizona's most unique & treasured places. The Wild and Scenic Rivers designation would permanently preserve the free-flowing condition of Fossil Creek, ensuring that the creek is never dammed again.

The U.S. Forest Service has determined that Fossil Creek meets the eligibility criteria for the Wild & Scenic Rivers System, and Congressman Renzi has worked with Senator McCain, in addition to various other local stakeholders to ensure widespread support for the Fossil Creek designation. The legislation is supported by the communities of the Town of Camp Verde, the City of Cottonwood, & the Yavapai-Apache Tribe.

Fossil Creek forms at the base of the Mogollon Rim near Strawberry & runs through 14 miles of the Coconino & Tonto National Forests & empties into the Verde River near Camp Verde.
