9-11 Memorial Groundbreaking
Gov. Napolitano broke ground today for Arizona’s 9-11 Memorial at Wesley Bolin Plaza. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, the Governor’s Arizona 9-11 Commission & Memorial sponsors McCarthy & SCF Arizona took part in the groundbreaking. “This Memorial is unique, bold, dynamic, educational and unforgettable,” Gov. Napolitano said. “The thoughts and remarks etched in stone will serve as learning tools for all of us, our children & our children’s children.”
The memorial was designed, by CoLAB+Jones Studio, Inc., & utilizes the sun to reflect the words & thoughts from Arizonans who were directly affected by the events of 9-11. The Memorial will display a fragment of World Trade Center Tower 1 that will be fully illuminated each year at noon, September 11.
In 2003, Gov. Jane Dee Hull created the Governor's 9-11 Memorial Commission by executive order to establish a memorial at the State Capitol so future generations will continue to remember 9-11. No public funds are being used to build or sustain the Memorial. All the funding is via private donations & the efforts of the Arizona 9-11 Memorial Commission.
