70% Contained

The Sand Fire is currently 1,200+ acres with 70% containment. The fire is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Winslow, AZ & 8 miles northwest of Chevelon Canyon Lake on the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest. The fire was human caused & is currently under investigation. The Arizona Complex Incident Management Team assumed control of the fire on Tuesday evening. Incident Commander, Larry Humphrey, states containment of the fire depends on a significant wind event that is predicted for today which may have an effect on the fire lines. The fire is burning ponderosa pine, pinyon pine & juniper vegetation. Resources include 4 Type 1 crews, 3 Type 2 crews, 4 engines, 3 water tenders, 2 bull dozers, 2 heavy air tankers, 2 air attack aircraft, 2 Type 1 helicopters, & 1 Type 3 helicopter. There are 173 fire personnel assigned to the fire. There are no travel restrictions in the area & Forest Road 34 remains open. Motorists are asked to travel with caution in the area & be aware of increased fire traffic.
